The problem
The patio ran along a plain Colorbond fence with nothing between it and the neighbours. The customer wanted three slatted timber privacy screens along it, and wanted them up before Christmas.
What made it harder
Roof work at the house had been pushed back by rain, so the roofers and the screens were competing for the same few days and the same space.
The customer also needed to leave for work by 10 on the day, which meant an early start to be let in.
How we solved it
Before anything was bought, we helped choose the screens. We pointed to a similar ready-made screen, and the customer settled on 1,800 × 1,200 mm hardwood screens, which have wider slats than the usual hardware store option.
For the frame we recommended H3 treated pine posts. H3 is the treatment grade for timber outdoors and above ground, and the posts come pre-primed, so they can be painted to match the house. We advised on how much paint the frames would need.
We booked the Friday rather than the Thursday so the job did not collide with the delayed roof work.
On the day
We arrived at 7:30 am so the customer could let us in before leaving for work, set the posts, and fixed all three screens.
The job was finished and the photos sent through by early afternoon.
Problem solved
All three screens were up and secure the same day. The customer's reply when the photos came through: “That looks great!”
